Australian travellers should be aware of the increased threat of terrorism globally and should consult with the general advice to Australian travellers, available at www.dfat.gov.au/zw-cgi/advice/general. Australian travellers should also be aware that an Australian overseas mission can only provide a very basic safety net for travellers in difficulty. Travellers need to be aware that Australians who enter a foreign state become subject to its laws and are legally accountable for acts they commit on its territory. In the event of an Australian citizen finding him or herself in difficulty, Australian consular officers will seek to ensure that Australian citizens receive the benefit of the same laws, administration, protection and means of redress which the foreign state affords its own subjects.
Australian's travelling to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), the United States Territory of Guam, or the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas (CNMI) are encourage to register with the Australian Embassy Pohnpei, or online at On-Line Registration of Australians Overseas
If you do happen to encounter serious problems while you are in Micronesia, you should seek assistance from the Australian Embassy. However, there are very clear limits to what the Australian Government or its Consular officers can do.
The Australian Embassy in Pohnpei provides a similar service for Canadian citizens.
