Australian High Commission Kuala Lumpur

The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur is Australia’s main diplomatic mission to Malaysia. It is the most visible evidence of the Australian-Malaysian diplomatic relations which have lasted for over 50 years.

Located in Malaysia’s capital city Kuala Lumpur, the High Commission is offers a number of services to Australians, Malays and other nationals. Among the services it offers are the following:

Visa and Immigration Services

The Australian High Commission contains two visa service points namely The Visa Office, and the Australian Visa Application Center (AVAC). The Visa Office specifically deals with three types of visas, i.e. Australian Declaratory visa, Resident Return visa and Citizenship by Descent. Admission to the office is on appointments only.

The AVAC is where people who want to travel to Australia make their visa applications. The center performs three main functions:

It offers information about the Australian visa application process

It issues visa application documents, and accepts the visa applications. The center accepts all types of visa applications except Resident Return visas, Australian Declaratory visas and Citizenship by Descent.

It makes appointments for people to lodge applications for Citizenship by Decent, Australian Declaratory visas and Resident Return visas with the High Commission.

Generally speaking, the periods from May to July; and October to January are when visitor and student visa applications peak. Therefore, anyone planning to travel to Australia in those months is advised to submit their applications at least three months in advance. Otherwise the visas may not be processed in time.

Due to the large number of visa applicants, the High Commission normally attends to only 100 applicants per day. Therefore it is advisable to arrive at the entrance at least 45 minutes before the opening time (see below) in order to stand a chance of being served.

Passport and Consular Services

The High Commission also provides passport, consular and notarial services to Australian citizens. All these services are available on appointment only. The contact details for making these appointments are availed to citizens as they enter the country.

The High Commission in Kuala Lumpur also has affiliate Consuls in Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. These Consuls also provide consular and passport services. However they do not handle visa or immigration applications.

There is also a Consular Emergency Center which handles consular and passport issues that arise outside working hours. This service is accessible to Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents through a toll-free number which they are availed with upon entry into Malaysia.

Other Services

The High Commission hosts the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) which helps Australian companies to do business in Malaysia and vice versa. It also offers Study, Internship and Scholarship opportunities for both Malaysian and Australian students. It also offers information on Australian culture, tourism and economic opportunities.
